SPRING is an all-wood cantilever chair with an inviting and playful appearance. Designed by Andrew Cheng, this chair integrates solid wood and plywood in a unique way, showcasing the changing direction of the grain and giving the chair a subtle yet distinctive character. The plywood seat and dowel legs add an extra springiness to the chair, while the solid wood front edge provides a soft touch for the back of the knees.
What sets SPRING apart is the unconventional connection between the plywood seat and the legs. Unlike traditional chairs where this connection is hidden, SPRING proudly displays it, adding to its unique and honest typology. This integration not only enhances the visual appeal of the chair but also provides stability for the user.
Constructed using bend ply and ash, SPRING is a testament to the designer's material research and innovative approach. The chair's dimensions are 440mm * 430mm * 460mm (seat), making it compact and versatile for various spaces.
SPRING was first conceptualized in May 2014, and the working prototype was completed in September 2014. It made its debut at the London Design Festival in the same year. The chair has garnered attention and accolades, including the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and contribute to improving quality of life.
With its playful appearance, unique integration of materials, and innovative design, SPRING chair is a true testament to Andrew Cheng's creativity and ingenuity. Its inviting nature and honest typology make it a standout piece in any space, adding both style and functionality.
